The most southerly point of the African continent is Cape Agulhas; where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. The name Agulhas derives from the Portuguese word meaning needles – some say because of the nature of the sharp saw-edged rock formations of the coast; while others claim because at this point the compasses showed no deviation. The shallow Agulhas Bank (60 fathoms deep) extends for 80 kilometers from the coast and is one of the worlds most prolific commercial fishing grounds. The Cape Agulhas Lighthouse has in modern times been fitted with a unit which has a beam of 18 000 000 candle-power and has a range of 27 kilometers. The building which houses a fascinating museum, celebrated 150 years in existence in 1999.

On the eastern side of the cape ancient fish traps known as ‘vywers’ which are still maintained and used. The traps are formed by the construction of low dams where the fish are stranded at low tide.
